Did you know Margaret Wright was among the few African American women who ran for the US presidency?

In 1976, four years after Shirley Chisholm’s bid, Margaret Wright ran for the presidency on the People’s Party ticket.

Margaret Wright was a shipyard worker during World War II and a community activist in Los Angeles, California.

Having been a Black Panther education minister, her campaign prioritized education reform and racial equality. The ticket received 49,016 votes. Wright passed away in 1996.
