South African telecom giant MTN has resolved to close all its outlets in Nigeria until further notice, citing security concerns. In a statement issued by MTN Nigeria, the decision is taken because \”The safety and security of our customers, staff and partners is our primary concern.\”
The closure comes shortly after South African businesses in Lagos, including MTN and Shoprite, have been vandalized in ongoing reprisal attacks. South Africa descended into another wave of xenophobic violence targeting African businesses and citizens in Johannesburg. Meanwhile, Nigerian police have beefed up security outside South African-owned businesses in the capital, Abuja, to avert further reprisals.
