Between 50 and 75 students of the Duke University many of whom were members of the African-American Society led a black student takeover of the Allen Building; the university’s main administration building to bring attention to and spark University action on the concerns of African-American students.
This takeover brought attention to issues such as the establishment of an African-American studies program, a black student union, a black cultural center, protection from police harassment, increasing the number of black faculty members and an increase in enrollment and financial support for African-American students
