Ahly and Zamalek win as Egyptian league returns to life

A five months hiatus finally came to an end as life returned to Egyptian football this weekend, with Egyptian Premier League matches taking place in Cairo and Alexandria.

After coming to a halt since mid-March due to COVID-19 outbreak, Egyptian Premier League was resumed on Thursday (6 August 2020) with a rescheduled game between Zamalek and Masry that took place at the Alexandria based Borg El Arab Stadium.

Zamalek had to wait to the second half to break the deadlock ten minutes after restart via the free scoring defender Mahmoud Alaa, who scored what proved to be the game\’s lone goal.

The hard fought victory served as a morale booster for Zamalek who will face Moroccan giants Raja Casablanca in the Total CAF Champions League semifinal next September.

The White Knights raised their tally to 34 points from 17 games, going second behind arch rivals Al Ahly, while Port Said based Al Masry remained tenth with 20 points.

Holders and record champions Al Ahly tightened their grip on top spot on Sunday (9 August) evening with a 2-0 victory over ENPPI at Cairo International Stadium.

Two second half goals from full backs Mohamed Hany (64) and Ali Maaloul (90+5) ensured The Red Devils their 17th victory from 18 games in this season’s Egyptian Premier League, to go 18 points clear on top. ENPPI’s tally stopped at 25 points in seventh place.

Like eternal rivals Zamalek, Al Ahly awaits another Moroccan giant, Wydad Casablanca next month in the other Total CAF Champions League semifinal.

Meanwhile, the Cairo titans will lock heads in the famous Egyptian capital derby on Saturday, 22 August 2020 at Cairo International Stadium.
