Did you know Burkina Faso was formerly known as \”The Republic of Upper Volta\”?

The name was changed to “Burkina Faso” on 4th August, 1984 by the president of the country at the time, Thomas Sankara.

The words “Burkina” and “Faso” both stem from different languages spoken in the country: “Burkina” comes from the Mossi language and means “HONEST” or “HONEST PEOPLE”, while “FASO” comes from the Dyula language which means “FATHERLAND OR FATHER’S HOUSE”

So Burkina Faso can be translated to “THE LAND OR HOUSE OF HONEST PEOPLE OR INCORRUPTIBLE PEOPLE”
