Did you know in 1962, Eric George Irons OBE, was appointed as Britain\’s first black magistrate judge?

Eric George Irons was a campaigner for social justice who took up discrimination cases with Nottingham and District Trades Council whilst working at Chilwell Ordinance Depot in 1952. His efforts in negotiation lead to the employment of more black workers both in the depot and in other establishments.

His efforts also led to Nottingham City Council lifting the ban on employing black bus drivers and transport workers in 1958.
