Barack Obama defeated Republican, John Mclain, a senior senator from Arizona in the presidential election held on 4^th November, 2008 becoming the first ever African-American to be elected to the Presidency. 

The swearing-in ceremony took place at the West Front of the United States Capitol grounds in Washington DC. It was among the most observed events by a global audience.
