Did you know The Gheralta Sacred Landscape in Northern Ethiopia has 121 rockhewn churches?

The Gheralta Sacred Landscape is home to 121 rock-hewn churches, believed to represent the single largest group of rock-hewn architecture in the world.
They date back to the 5th century and can be divided into four zones: the Atsbi, Hawzen-Ger\’alta, Sinkata-Adigrat, and Tembien, with churches of different ages, sizes, and histories.
The main cluster of churches is divided into two groups, the northern and the southern. The northern ones, which lie to the north of the river Jordan, comprise of Biete Golgotha Mikael, Biete Mariam, Biete Denagel, Biete Maskal, and Biete Medhani Alem (also considered to be the largest monolith church on earth).
In 2018, it attained UNESCO World Heritage Site status.
