With regard to Mali, the Authority notes with satisfaction that the Transition process is following its course and that the Transition authorities have made progress with the establishment a joint mechanism for monitoring and evaluating the Transition timetable involving the government, ECOWAS, the AU, the UN, the ECOWAS Mediator, the Steering Committee and the Technical Committee.
To this end, West African leaders have instructed the ECOWAS Commission to assist the Malian authorities, with the support of the AU and the UN. This, is in order to organize a meeting with the financial and technical partners to mobilize the resources necessary to meet the socio-political and security challenges in order to help meet the deadline for the end of the Transition set at 2024.
According to the same source, the Conference expresses its deep concern at “the weakening of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (Minusma), following the withdrawal of certain troop-contributing countries from the Mission”. . And the Conference to call for the reinforcement of the workforce and the prerogatives of the Minusma in order to enable it to discharge its mandate effectively.
Regarding the case of Ivorian soldiers detained by the Malian courts, the meeting welcomed the various diplomatic efforts made by ECOWAS and its Member States as well as by the United Nations to obtain their release. In this regard, the Conference “calls on the Malian authorities to respond positively to the various calls for the release of the said soldiers”.
