DNT News, Accra. Ghana’s Minister of Tourism and Creative Arts Honorable Barbara Oteng Gyasi laid three set of wreaths on behalf of the Government and the people of Ghana at three separate locations in Accra on Monday to mark the 2020 Emancipation Day Celebrations.
The locations were the W E B Dubois Center, George Padmore Library, and the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park. Also laying the wreath at the W E B Dubois Center on behalf of the Global African Family was Jessica Ayivor, President of the African American Association of Ghana (AAAG). At the Padmore Center, Rabbi Kohan laid the wreath on behalf of the Global African Family.
The third and final wreath on behalf of the Global African Family was laid by Her Excellency Ambassador Dr. Ereika Bennett of Diaspora Affairs Forum (DAF). Third and fourth sets of wreaths were also laid at the three locations on behalf of the traditional rulers and the youth of Ghana respectively.
Emancipation Day is the abolition of slavery in the British Colonies in 1834. It is an annual observance introduced in Ghana as the first African country to help commemorate the resistance and liberation struggle of African people in the Diaspora against enslavement and the violation of their human rights.
The Theme for the celebration this year is Emancipation, our Heritage, our Strength. And the sub-theme is Leveraging our Resilience: Black Lives Matter.
Speaking at the third and final ceremony, Honorable Barbara Oteng Gyasi said “as a people, and especially as a continent, we should rise to the challenges of our times. It is disheartening that hundreds of young Africans die in the desert on their way to Europe in search of greener pastures.”
“We should equally be troubled by the hordes of refugees created by unnecessary and irrational conflicts often triggered by political leadership with parochial agenda,” Oteng continued.
She further stated that Emancipation Day should remind everyone of our common heritage and destiny and rekindle our commitment to the progress of the African continent.
