Senegal Wins 2019 WAFU Cup of Nations

Senegal have won the 2019 West African Football Union Cup of Nations after holding Ghana to a 3-1 penalty victory.

Held at the Stade Lat-Dior in Thies, Senegal, the hard-fought finals ended goalless at the end of regular play time. However, both teams found the net in the second half of the extra time.

The deadlock was broken by substitute Youssouph Badji who scored in the 107th minute to hand Senegal the lead. Ghana’s Joseph Esso scored an equalizer two minutes later to put the Black Stars back in the game.

The game went into penalties, but Ghana failed to convert their spot-kicks after scoring just one of the four penalties. The Teranga Lions stepped up to the challenge, scoring 3 of the 4 penalties to win the sub-regional title.

Ghanaian captain Shafiu Mumuni was adjudged the tournament’s top scorer with four goals while Guinea’s Jean Moustet was named the Player of the Tournament.
