He is remembered for successfully predicting a solar eclipse that took place on April 14, 1789 and for inventions such as a working clock made solely out of wood in 1753, the lightning rod, bifocal glasses and the glass harmonica.
Between 1792 to 1797, he used his expertise in astronomy to publish almanacs which contained information on celestial bodies in the sky and seasons, his views on peace, politics, and abolition of slavery and racial discrimination.
