Togo Agrees Deal with Dangote Group to Produce Fertilizer and Cement

The Dangote Industries Limited has finalized an agreement with the government of Togo to develop and transform Togolese phosphate into fertilizer for consumption in the West African sub-Region.

The agreement seeks to revolutionize the production and consumption of fertilizer products in Africa.  Under the agreement, Togo will provide access to its phosphate resources while the Dangote Group will provide access to ammonia and to the Nigerian market.

A joint statement issued by the Dangote Group and the Togolese Presidency said the project is in accordance with the second pillar of the Togo National Development Plan, and will see “the production of more than 1 million tonnes of fertilizers from phosphate.” The project is estimated to cost about $2 billion and is expected to create thousands of direct jobs.

At the signing ceremony, the Dangote Group also announced the establishment of a cement-manufacturing plant with an annual capacity of 1.5 million tonnes in Lomé. The plant will make use of clinker from Togo and Nigeria to produce cement that meets the demand of both local and sub-regional markets. Billed to start in the first quarter of 2020, the investment will cost $60 million and will create 500 direct jobs.

Togo is one of the leading producers of phosphate in Africa, with over two-billion tonnes of phosphate reserves. By partnering with the Dangote Group, the country hopes to tap the investment and expertise of Africa’s largest industrial group for its 2018-2022 National Development Plans.
