A 26-year old Ghanaian graduate researcher at China’s Southeast University has been selected for the 2019 Green Talents Awards in Germany.
Georgina Esi Takyi-Annan, who is the only Ghanaian among awardees, undertook research that focuses on a green and sustainable design approach to achieving affordable housing in developing countries and West Africa.
The young, ambitious researcher dedicates her research efforts to understanding how sustainable building design concepts can be implemented in the developing world.
Georgina has previously worked on strategies that employ design concepts to maximize natural lighting in students’ hostels. In her current research undertaking, she is examining the possibility of incorporating green concepts and sustainable architectural designs in the development of affordable housing units in third world countries.
Coming from a country that is confronted with serious housing deficits, the graduate researcher in architecture is convinced that available, sustainable, and affordable housing for people of all social and economic classes is critical to the health, social, and economic development of the country. The objective of her research is, therefore, to make housing available to all people through the implementation of green concepts and sustainable building designs.
Commenting on her research, the judges indicated that Georgina’s research could help raise awareness for sustainable architecture and also tackle some of the challenges that come with the implementation of green buildings. As a result, she was selected along with 24 others from 21 countries to receive the Green Talents Awards.
Organized by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the initiative awards young international researchers annually for their efforts in making societies more sustainable in any area of studies.
