The Black Satellites of Ghana picked up the gold medal in the men’s football category of the ongoing All African Games on an electric Friday night at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The only goal of the game, courtesy Jerry Afriyie that ensured a repeat of the 2011 heroics in Maputo.
The game kicked off with intricate exchanges in the early part of the game. A goal in the opening 20 minutes was disallowed after the referee spotted an infringement inside the penalty box.
Both teams created very good opportunities to break the deadlock. The best chance of the first half fell to Abdul Hakim Sulemana. Unfortunately, he was unable to convert the chance.
Coach Desmond Ofei’s charges continued were they left off in the first half, as they dominated the Ugandans in every department of the game in the second.
In the added time of the exchanges, Jerry Afriyie’s low strike from the edge of the box left the Ugandan goalkeeper scrambling for answers.
The Satellites spent the final minutes of the game making sure they kept possession to see the game through. Ghana secured gold, Uganda picked up silver and Senegal settled for bronze.
