The Men’s National U-20 side-The Black Satellites, secured their first victory at the ongoing ALL African Games by beating Gambia on a warm Tuesday night in the capital city, Accra.
After a rather shaky start against Congo that saw the team draw goalless, the Black Satellites needed to dig deep to come up with something special to beat Gambia. An emphatic 3-1 victory over their regional neighbors definitely sent a warning message to their contenders.
This victory puts Ghana on top of Group A with an enviable four points from two group games, with a semi-final berth in clear sight.
Ghana’s lead came after just 12 minutes, after the commencement of proceedings. The goal settled the nerves of both players and the expectant home crowd. A ferocious strike by Misbau Aziz put Ghana in the lead heading into the first half break.
The team turned up after the break proving too strong for the Gambians. Being at their menacing best, the team’s effort was rewarded four minutes in, after Abdul Aziz Issah’s strike gave Ghana her second goal on the night.
A chance to give Ghana a commanding lead in the 75th minute came via a penalty. A chance Misbau Aziz failed to convert from the spot.
Ebrimah Ceesay pulled one back for the Gambia to grab a consolation in the 83rd minute.
The Black Satellites squashed every hope of a Gambia comeback, through a Jerry Afriyie goal in stoppage time to secure an emphatic 3-1 win for Ghana.
Ghana looks set to take on Benin next, on Saturday in the final group game.
