Innovating for Change: The Inspiring Journey of Mubarakatu Farouk

At AGR, we are constantly seeking out individuals who exemplify leadership, innovation, and a commitment to creating sustainable solutions for Africa’s challenges. One such individual who stands out as a beacon of inspiration is Mubarakatu Farouk. As the co-founder of Kodu Technology, a registered nutritionist, a leadership-oriented professional, and an agripreneur, Mubarakatu is making significant strides in addressing menstrual hygiene and poverty through innovative, eco-friendly solutions. Watch our interview with her at the 2024 3i Africa summit here

Transforming Menstrual Hygiene with Kodu Technology

Mubarakatu Farouk and her team at Kodu Technology are on a mission to revolutionise menstrual hygiene in Ghana and beyond. They have introduced an innovative solution: sustainable banana fibre sanitary pads. These pads are not only eco-friendly but also aim to provide a safe and affordable menstrual product for women and girls, particularly those in rural areas.

Through Kodu Technology, Mubarakatu has identified a unique way to address two significant issues: menstrual hygiene and environmental sustainability. Ghana is one of the largest producers of bananas and plantains in West Africa, yet these plants are often underutilised. By converting banana fibres into sanitary pads, Kodu Technology is not only reducing waste but also providing a valuable product that can help keep girls in school during their menstrual cycles.

Addressing Period Poverty and Empowering Women

Period poverty remains a critical issue globally, affecting over 500 million women. In Ghana, many girls miss school during their periods due to a lack of access to affordable and reliable menstrual products. Mubarakatu’s efforts through Kodu Technology aim to bridge this gap. By producing biodegradable and affordable sanitary pads, Kodu Technology ensures that more girls can attend school without interruption, thereby promoting gender equality in education.

Kodu Technology’s business model is both innovative and impactful. They adopt a B2B2C (business-to-business-to-consumer) approach, partnering with retailers and distributors to reach the end consumers—rural young girls. The company sells their pads at an affordable price of $0.80, ensuring a profit margin that supports their sustainability while remaining accessible to those in need.

Economic and Environmental Impact

Kodu Technology’s impact extends beyond menstrual hygiene. The production of banana fibre sanitary pads creates a long chain of production that generates employment opportunities. Currently, Kodu Technology has created jobs for 20 people directly and indirectly, with plans to expand this to 5,000 jobs in the next five years. This not only boosts the local economy but also provides a sustainable source of income for many families.

Moreover, the environmental benefits of Kodu Pads cannot be overstated. Traditional sanitary pads take up to 500 years to decompose, contributing significantly to plastic pollution. In contrast, Kodu Pads are biodegradable, offering an eco-friendly alternative that helps reduce environmental impact.

A Call to Action

Mubarakatu Farouk’s work with Kodu Technology is a shining example of how innovation and leadership can address pressing societal issues. Her dedication to menstrual equity, environmental sustainability, and economic empowerment serves as an inspiration to all Africans striving to make a positive impact in their communities.
